The Pope: Who He Was and What Comes Next

🕊️ The Pope Has Passed Away
This morning, the world received news of the death of Pope Francis at age 88. As global tributes pour in, here’s what you should know.

📜 Who is the Pope?

  • The Pope is the Bishop of Rome and spiritual leader of over 1.3 billion Catholics worldwide.

  • He also leads the Vatican: an independent city-state and the smallest country in the world.

  • His job includes shaping global Catholic doctrine, appointing bishops, and serving as a moral and diplomatic voice.

🌍 Why Was Pope Francis So Influential?

  • First pope from the Americas. He was born in Argentina!

  • Known for humility, environmental advocacy, and pushing for a more inclusive Church.

  • Took bold stances on poverty, climate change, immigration, and interfaith dialogue.

  • Tried to reform the Church from within, especially in response to sexual abuse scandals.

🏛️ What is Vatican City?

  • A sovereign state within Rome, Italy, home to the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church’s headquarters.

  • Has its own government, postal service, media outlet, and Swiss Guard (yes, they wear those colorful uniforms).

  • It plays a huge role in global diplomacy, despite being only 0.2 square miles.

⏭️ What Happens Now?

  • Cardinals will gather in Rome to hold a papal conclave — a secret meeting to elect the next pope.

  • Until a new pope is chosen, the Vatican enters a period called “sede vacante” (Latin for “the seat is vacant”).

  • Expect a mix of tradition, global attention, and behind-the-scenes political maneuvering.

🕯️ Interesting Fact: The pope doesn’t use his birth name — Pope Francis was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio.
